Speaking Ill of the Dead--The Media Treatment of Nick Berg and Pat Tillman

My column last week was written before the news about the horrific slaughter of Nick Berg, an innocent American contractor. I had commented on the stupidity and cowardice of the mainstream (see also: lib/dem/soc/commie) media, their fear of us doing anything remotely discomforting in this, or any, war.

However, Mr. Berg’s tragic demise brought into focus the true problem of the media. Their complicity with the enemies of America.

I’ve seen the video. I made a point to watch it. Not because I am a ghoul, or because I get a kick out of the senseless and gruesome death of an innocent. No, it is because of something Dad taught me a long time ago. Know your enemy. Know the capabilities of your enemies, know their modus operandi, learn just what they will do and how far they will go. Only then can you adequately prepare to defend yourself, and defeat them. And yet, our media have not given us the tools with which to understand just what wickedness we are fighting, the malevolence that is terrorism. The evil that must be vanquished.

Now, I could understand the mainstream media wanting to ''spare'' Mr. Berg’s parents (although the media didn’t seem to be too bothered about sparing the parents and families of the folks murdered on 9/11). What I cannot understand, however, is why the media are now being complicit in the trashing of this Nicholas Berg.

Do an Internet search on Google News of the exact phrase ''Nick Berg.'' At today’s writing (Tuesday, 05/18/2004) the search created 5,680 hits. Many of the items called what happened to Mr. Berg a beheading. A beheading (be it by sword or guillotine) is swift. What these terrorist scumbags did to Mr. Berg was not a beheading, it was a forty-second slaughter, with his head literally sawn off. You could hear his screams for the first 20 seconds, up until his trachea was finally severed. Even worse, the media are now printing all manner of conspiracy theories about Mr. Berg, with absolutely no basis in fact.

So far, I’ve seen stories that state that Nick Berg was a Jewish spy. A Halliburton operative. A Mossad Operative. A CIA operative. That Mr. Berg was not killed by terrorists, but by the CIA itself, posing as terrorists. They’ve blamed the FBI for his death, the military, Dubya/Cheney/Rummy/Condi/Mannie/Moe/Jack/etc. They’ve even claimed that it never happened at all--that the entire event was staged to divert media attention from the heinous ''skivvies on the head of a prisoner'' incident. Not that it worked, however. Do a similar Google News search on ''Abu Ghraib'' and you’ll get over 20,000 hits.

Of course, the media have focused on Nick Berg’s father, a viciously anti-war and anti-Dubya activist. Why not? After all, he’s ''one of their own.'' Lost in the news reports were Nick’s philanthropic activities, his good works for the poor, only to be replaced by the ranting of a lib/dem/soc/commie using his own son’s slaughter to trash the war, the president and the military. A member of International A.N.S.W.E.R., a communist front organization, Michael Berg appeared on camera to shed crocodile tears and spin conspiracy theories on the death of his own son. I’m not sure who is more shameful--Nick Berg’s father, or the lib/dem/soc/commie media who slurped up his words like so much champagne.

Now, if this were the only example, one might be excused of assuming this was a mere aberration. But then, take a slimy little no-talent twit named Ted Rall who makes a career out of creating a no-talent ''comic'' strip that regularly trashes Dubya, calling him evil. That in and of itself is no real shock--most of the lib/dem/soc/commie media seem to make that exercise its stock in trade. However, when the tragic death of former football player Pat Tillman came to light, the squamulouse Mr. Rall dedicated a ''comic'' and an editorial to trashing Mr. Tillman and his sacrifice. He, defending his right to be a cad and a jerk on ''Hannity and Colmes'' and ''The O’Reilly Factor,'' proved himself to be this generation’s candidate for ''Tokyo Rose.'' Sadly, Mr. Rall is in a rather large crowd of contenders...

I see the media, which are supposed to serve the public trust, instead serving the enemy. I see the political pundits using the death of honorable servicemen and women in our war against terrorism as a club with which they beat down our nation and our president. I see the alphabet news anchors and reporters, braying that they are impartial, while all the evidence suggest that they are so left-leaning that it’s a wonder they don’t keel over to port every five seconds. I see our military trashed. I see our innocent civilians slaughtered. I see terrorists appeased and held blameless for the evil they do.

I’m sick of seeing it. I’m sick of hearing it. I’m sick of reading it.

I’d wager that you are too.

Perhaps it is time to look at a serious boycott of the major news outlets in the United States: ABC News, CBS News, NBC News, CNN, MSNBC, the Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, New York Times, et al. The news organizations, and their sponsors.

I’m not a great fan of boycotts per se, and I feel they should be used as a last resort. However, the news media have proved themselves to be blinded by their own self-importance, and their own lib/dem/soc/commie bent. They’ve not become ''fair and balanced'' as Fox News has pioneered. If anything, they’ve become even more politically reactionary and less able to discern the line between news and opinion.

The news media are supposed to be the fourth estate--a balance to the three branches of our government. Instead, the news media constitute a fifth column, helping to destroy the nation from within.

They have violated the public trust again and again and again. It is time for them to be punished. It is time to hurt them financially. It is time for them to either tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, or be put out of business.

I urge you to pass this article along to everyone you can. To friends, relatives, colleagues. If you know of a group that wishes to organize such a boycott, please let me know and I’ll be happy to help publicize it.
